Problem Gambling Screening: What works and what doesn’t-2017 (1 hours)

Educational Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify the need and rationale for screening for gambling problems in a range of health care settings.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of how to utilize effective brief problem gambling screening strategies.
  • Participants will be able to identify how to develop a problem gambling integrated intake.

 

Educational Goal:

Participants will gain understanding of effective strategies for screening for gambling problems along with the rationale for problem gambling screening in health care settings.

Mindfulness Based Strategies for Treatment of Disordered Gambling (1 hours)

Outline:

·      Define Mindfulness and Mindfulness-based Recovery Promotion

·      Present brief overview of research on mindfulness approaches to gambling disorder treatment

·      Describe strategies for integrating mindfulness strategies with other common treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioral and 12-Step approaches

·      Practice brief mindfulness exercises

 

Goal:

·      Participants will gain an understanding of ways in which Mindfulness therapeutic practices can be effectively used in the treatment of gambling disorder and integrated with other approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and 12 Step facilitation.

 

Objective:

·      Participants will be able to identify at least 3 specific mindfulness techniques for supporting recovery from a gambling disorder

·      Participants will be able to define ways to integrate mindfulness techniques with CBT and 12-Step approaches to gambling disorder recovery

Sustainability for Problem Gambling Prevention Through Capacity Building (1 hours)

Course Outline:

1.     Define capacity building

2.     Identify stakeholders in the community necessary for capacity building

3.      Introduce initial steps for creating a capacity building action plan

•             Meaning of money and problematic gambling

•             Spiral of financial options

•             Talking about money and finances

•             Assessing financial impact of problem gambling

Participants will gain an understanding of how the meaning and value of money changes with the progression of a gambling disorder and how to talk about and address the financial impact of problem gambling as a key component of the recovery process.

·      Prevalence of gambling and problem gambling among older adults

·      Reasons older adults gamble

·      Risk factors for problem gambling among older adults

·      Warning signs of problem gambling among older adults

·      Prevention and Intervention strategies

 

Educational Goal:

Participants will learn about the risks associated with older adult gambling; why they are more vulnerable to developing a gambling problem; and what safe guards can be established for this fixed income community. 

 

Educational Objectives:

·       Identify the three (3) signs for older adult risky gambling behaviors.

·       Understand why older adults are more vulnerable to the consequences of gambling problems.

·       Identify the three (3) safeguards that older adults can incorporate into their behavior that will help them make their gambling safe on a fixed income.

Participants will be able to identify at least 2 strategies for using limited gambling as a treatment goal for clients

Participants will be able to identify key elements for using harm reduction in the treatment of problem gambling

Participants will be able to describe family involvement strategies when working on limited gambling and harm reduction strategies in the treatment of problem gambling

  • Review of 12 Steps and role of each step in self-forgiveness

Participants will gain an understand of the key components of self-forgiveness based on exploration of process from multiple spiritual perspectives and define how the Twelve Steps of Gamblers Anonymous aligns with this process.

  • Participants will be able to define the key components in a process of self-forgiveness
  • Participants will be able to describe how working  the 12 Steps of Gamblers Anonymous helps a person in recovery achieve self-forgiveness
